The adidas F50 is adidas's speed boot. It launched in 2004, ahead of Euro 2004. From 2006 the Tunit let you swap the upper, chassis and studs. In 2010 it became the lighter F50 adiZero, worn by Messi. adidas ended it in 2015, when the X took over, and brought it back in 2024.
F50
Robben wore the black and yellow originals in his first season at Chelsea. The F50 landed just before Euro 2004, lean, light and loud.
A cover over the laces for a clean striking area, K-leather with mesh, and a plastic stabiliser bar along the side.

adidas released it for Euro 2004, next to the Predator Pulse. The idea was FusionFrame: one upper, three insole boards to pick from (Lightweight, Professional or Comfort). Underneath, a split sole with X-Traxion studs you could change.
SoccerBible says the name, Football 50, pointed back to 1954, when Germany won the World Cup in adidas boots with exchangeable studs. The F50 marked 50 years since.

F50+ Spider
2025 RemakeThe Spider. Robben, Duff, Ashley Cole, Riquelme, Defoe and Trezeguet all wore the original, black with electric-blue web lines.
A web-like plastic cage over a tough textile upper, and a Velcro flap in kangaroo leather over the laces.

SoccerBible puts the F50+ range in 2005. The cage took its pattern from cable-and-grid shapes in architecture, and the Velcro flap meant you could open the cover, lace up and stick it back. The mesh was tougher than on the first F50, the sole stayed split, and the FusionFrame insoles still swapped.
The dates get mixed up: the 2025 remakes are sold as the "2004" Spider, and SoccerBible and Footy Headlines call it the F50+ Spider. In October 2025 Unisport got its own 995-pair Spider remake for its 30th birthday.

F50.6 Tunit

A football boot you could build yourself. Swap the upper, chassis and studs for the pitch. This was the Tunit. A young Messi wore one at the 2006 World Cup.
Swappable parts: uppers, a Pro-Lite Speed or Comfort chassis, and soft, firm or hard ground studs. A bigger, stiffer lace cover.

It came out in late 2005 and was everywhere by early 2006. adidas calls it its first fully interchangeable boot. You could buy the parts on their own and put your pair together at the ground. The main upper was a light adiHex synthetic, and a ClimaCool upper with air holes was made for hot, dry days.
For the World Cup in Germany adidas made 32 International uppers, one for each country at the finals, in their national colours. Six launch colours, four more later. Robben, Ashley Cole, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Cissé, Duff and Defoe were all F50 players. Messi later went for customised F30i boots with a fixed soleplate instead of the swap-it-yourself setup.

+F50.7 Tunit

Ten years on, Hamburg's Gideon Jung turned up in a rare +F50.7 Tunit ClimaCool.
Three uppers to pick from: leather, synthetic or ClimaCool. The ClimaCool one has open laces, no lace cover.

The build-it-yourself idea carried on into 2007, with the same swappable parts. Footy Headlines says the ClimaCool upper felt closer to leather than the synthetic one, with a soft tongue taken from adidas running shoes.

F50.8 Tunit

In February 2025 Michael Olise wore black, gold and yellow F50.8 Tunits in training at Bayern, about 17 years after they came out.
Still a Tunit: a modular boot, so the studs and chassis swap out like on the F50.6 and F50.7.

In September 2018 George Weah, then Liberia's president, played 79 minutes of his last game for his country, aged 51, in an old pair of F50 Tunits. Footy Headlines thought they were F50.8s.

Robben premiered it for Real Madrid in November 2008, and Podolski wore the white and red one at Bayern. About £120, about 305g.
True Blue/White/Cyan followed in March 2009, with swappable insoles and three sets of studs. Villa, Adebayor, Messi and Robben were the faces.

F50i Tunit

2009 Champions League final, Rome. Messi heads in, loses a boot, picks it up and kisses it. His pair was a custom F30i from the F50i range, with the fixed soleplate he liked.
Sprintskin: a one-layer synthetic upper, lighter and thinner, for a better feel on the ball.

Messi wore his custom pair in the May final, before the F50i was in the shops: SoccerBible says he chose the F30i build because he preferred a fixed soleplate to the Tunit's swappable one. The F50i went on sale in early July 2009: about £100 a pair, or £125 for the full pack with swappable insoles and studs. That season brought the treble and his first Ballon d'Or.
Then his signature F50i pairs: Navy/Gold/Argentina Blue in K-leather, with a lace-cover graphic from Argentina's flag and Rosario, and later White/Navy/Gold.

In 2010 adidas dropped the swappable parts for one 165g boot.

adidas launched it in Barcelona with Messi and David Villa. The synthetic version weighed 165g, adidas's lightest boot so far. The leather one, the version Messi used, was 175g. Inside, Sprintweb held the foot. Underneath, a Sprintframe sole only 1 mm thick in places.
Forlán's pair in that final was Black/Sun leather, and Salomon Kalou wore Sun/Black/Gold in the FA Cup final. Messi, Villa and Robben all wore the 2010 colours in South Africa. His first adiZero signature, Ballon d'Or Gold/Black, followed in 2010/11.

SoccerBible reported 145g: 20g lighter than the adiZero and 5g lighter than Puma's v1.10 SL, which gave adidas the lightest production boot on the market. It didn't say which size. Warning/Black/White went on sale on 1 February 2011 at about £210, with more colours through the year. In 2020 a Prime upper came back on an X Ghosted sole, in the Memory Lane pack.

It launched in November 2013 as the headline of the Samba Pack, in Solar Zest and Solar Blue. 150g, which SoccerBible called the lightest F50 yet. New Speedtraxion studs, and the miCoach slot stayed.
In May 2014, a month before Brazil, came the Battle Pack: exactly half white, half black, with gold stripes for the trophy. SoccerBible says Messi's Birthday Boots for his 27th were limited to 27 pairs.

Questions
How does the adidas F50 fit?
Snug. One boot reviewer says the 2011 adiZero miCoach fits true to size (the leather a touch long), and the 2013 adiZero IV is very snug: true to size for medium to wide feet, half a size up if you're between sizes. Unisport says the F50 Messi Elite runs very tight on purpose.
Is the adidas F50 good for wide feet?
Mostly no. One boot reviewer says players with wide feet should avoid the 2013 adiZero IV, and Unisport says wide feet should avoid the F50 Messi Elite.
Does the F50 Messi run small?
It runs very tight, on purpose. Unisport says go true to size for a second-skin feel, or half a size up for a normal fit. The forefoot is narrow.
What does F50 stand for?
Football 50. SoccerBible says the name pointed back to 1954, when Germany won the World Cup in adidas boots with exchangeable studs, and the 2004 F50 marked 50 years since.
When did the adidas F50 come out?
2004, just before Euro 2004. The first F50 launched next to the Predator Pulse.
When was the F50 discontinued?
adidas said on 18 May 2015 that it was ending the F50 adizero, after 11 years. The X 15 launched the same month as its new speed boot.
When did the F50 come back?
In 2024. Messi wore the purple Fast Reborn F50 on 19 May 2024, and the full launch followed on 3 June 2024.
How many adidas F50 models are there?
Sixteen models on this page, from 2004 to 2026: F50, F50+ Spider, F50.6, F50.7, F50.8 and F50.9 Tunit, F50i, adiZero, II, Prime, miCoach, III, IV, V, the 2024 F50 Elite and the F50 Hyperfast. Plus remakes.
What is the adidas F50 Tunit?
The F50 you built yourself (2006–2009). You could swap the upper, the chassis and the studs. adidas calls the F50.6 Tunit its first fully interchangeable boot.
What's the difference between the F50.6, F50.7, F50.8 and F50.9 Tunit?
The F50.6 (2006) started the Tunit idea. The F50.7 (2007) came with leather, synthetic or ClimaCool uppers. The F50.8 (2008) kept the modular build. The F50.9 (late 2008) was a full redesign with an adiGrip upper and adiDot.
What's the difference between the F50i and the F50 adiZero?
The F50i (2009) was still a Tunit, with swappable insoles and studs and a Sprintskin upper. The adiZero (2010) dropped the swappable parts, weighed 165g and moved the laces off-centre.
Which F50 did Messi kiss?
His F50i pair from the 2009 Champions League final in Rome. He headed in, lost a boot, then picked it up and kissed it. SoccerBible says the pair was a custom F30i from the F50i range, with a fixed soleplate.
Why did Messi wear customised F50s?
He preferred a fixed soleplate. SoccerBible says he played the 2009 final in custom F30i boots from the F50i range for that reason, and chose customised F30i boots over the swap-it-yourself Tunit.
What was Messi's first signature F50?
The F50.9 Tunit Messi in Silver/Blue, 2008/09, his first season in Barcelona's no.10.
What is the F50 adiZero Prime?
A 145g version of the adiZero from 2011, 20g lighter, which SoccerBible said made it the lightest production boot on the market. More on the Prime.
What's the difference between the F50 adiZero Prime and the standard adiZero?
Weight and build. The Prime (2011) weighed 145g, 20g less than the 165g adiZero, with an even thinner one-layer adiLite Twin upper, a plastic frame along the bottom and support bands inside.
What is the F50 adiZero miCoach?
The 2011 adiZero with a slot under the sockliner for the miCoach Speed Cell chip, which tracked speed, sprints and distance. adidas called it the world's first boot with a brain. More on the miCoach.
What's the difference between the F50 adiZero III and IV?
The III (November 2012) had a re-textured upper on the same Sprintframe sole, 165g. The IV (November 2013) brought a Hybridtouch upper, a see-through Speedfoil heel, new studs and 150g.
What's the difference between the F50 adiZero IV and V?
The V (January 2015) moved the stripes to the heel and tongue, got a new sole with extra forefoot grip and dropped the miCoach slot.
What is the adidas F50 Spider?
The F50+ with the web-like cage, black with electric-blue lines. adidas remade it in 2025 and sold it as the 2004 colourway, and Unisport got a 995-pair Spider for its 30th birthday. More in Remakes.
What's the difference between the original F50 and the F50+ Spider?
The first F50 (2004) had mesh with a plastic stabiliser bar along the side and a lace cover. The F50+ Spider swapped that for a web-like plastic cage and a Velcro lace cover.
What does Chameleon mean on an F50?
It's a colourway: Chameleon/Electricity, the purple F50 adiZero that changes shade with the light. It was Messi's colourway at the 2010 World Cup.
Who wore the adidas F50?
Robben wore the first F50, and Duff and Ashley Cole the F50+ Spider. Messi wore the Tunit at the 2006 World Cup and the F50i in the 2009 final. Villa, Forlán and Bale wore the adiZero. James Rodríguez won the 2014 Golden Boot in F50s. Messi, Yamal and Son launched the 2024 F50.
What replaced the adidas F50?
The adidas X. The X 15 launched in May 2015, the same month adidas said it was ending the F50.
Is the F50 Hyperfast an F50?
Yes. It's the next F50, announced on 30 April 2026 and on sale online from 7 May, with a full-length plate and bladed studs. More on the Hyperfast.
What's the difference between the F50 Hyperfast Elite and EVO?
Mainly weight. The EVO is 130g. The Elite is 179g laced or 170g laceless. All three came out in the Too Light pack, announced on 30 April 2026. More on the Hyperfast.
