The Nike Total 90 (T90) was Nike's boot for power and accuracy. It came out in 2000, with off-centre laces for a bigger striking area. Seven more top models followed: the II, III, Supremacy and four Lasers, ending with the Laser IV in 2011. The Hypervenom replaced it in 2013.
T90 Air Zoom
A Colosseum in Rome. Figo, Totti, Davids and Vieira fighting cyber-samurai for a silver T90 ball. That was Nike's ad, and that's how the Total 90 arrived.
Off-centre laces, moved to the outside of the foot for a bigger striking area. A tongue flap over the top.

Nike says the Total 90 was born on the pitch in 2000, in the spring. The idea is in the name: a boot that stays comfortable for the full 90 minutes.
A synthetic upper, Zoom Air in the heel, and Nike's First Touch coating over more of the upper than on the boot that came next. Bierhoff, Nakata, Thuram, Guardiola and Seedorf were in that first ad too.

Figo, Scholes, Roberto Carlos and Totti wore it at the 2002 World Cup. A year later a 17-year-old Rooney scored his first England goal in it, the youngest England scorer at 17 years and 317 days.
A fold-down tongue covers the laces, so the ball doesn't bounce off them.

Rooney started his Nike career in it in June 2003. The England goal came on 6 September 2003, away to Macedonia.
It launched in 2002 in Black/White/Red. KNG-100 G synthetic upper, made to feel close to kangaroo leather but lighter, and it kept water out. 270 g, light for the time.

T90 Air Zoom III

28 September 2004. Rooney's Manchester United debut: a hat-trick against Fenerbahçe at Old Trafford, in white and gold T90 IIIs. That summer he'd scored four at Euro 2004.
No tongue any more, and the circled 90 on the instep. This is where it started.

United won 6-2 in the Champions League. Rooney was 18.
Nike released the III in 2004, just before Euro 2004 in Portugal. Figo, Totti, Rio Ferdinand and Roberto Carlos wore it, and Fernando Torres was one of its faces. Made in Italy, 295 g.

T90 Supremacy

Rooney had a big hand in this one. It showed up on his feet early in 2006, and Nike's players took it to the World Cup in Germany that summer.
A space on the heel for a flag or a number, and a big Zoom Air pad under the heel.

Late in that season Rooney broke a bone in his foot at Chelsea, and the boot was in the news for the wrong reasons. He was back in time for the World Cup, in Supremacys, and many pros used the heel space for their flag. His tournament ended with a red card against Portugal in July 2006.
Soft KNG-100 microfibre with a grippy coating. Round studs under the front, two bladed studs in the middle: a layout Nike later used on the Tiempo. 290 g. A leather version came later.

Zest · 2019 Remake ShownBright Zest yellow. Rooney smashing a camera, then the cameraman. The Dirty Sanchez lads taking on Gattuso and Frings. That was the Laser I's launch in 2007.
Shot Shield: rings on the instep around a bigger, cleaner striking area. A foot skeleton printed on the plate.

Nike's research said 69% of shots on goal are hit with the instep. So it made that part bigger and cleaner, with rings for power and swerve. The line: "Put it where you want it." Gattuso, Figo and Rooney were the first faces.
Kangaroo leather or KNG-100 synthetic, an eVent layer against water, Zoom Air in the heel. Zest came first, with a White/Red/Black pair, then eight colourways in twelve months. Rooney wore it in a Champions League semi-final in May 2007.

V-Twin lacing on top of the off-centre laces, so more of the foot is free for striking.

It dropped in April 2008. Ferdinand, Torres, Malouda, Puyol, Cannavaro and Rooney led the way. The Shot Shield got an update and kept its rings. Teijin synthetic and mesh on top, an eVENT layer against water.
For Euro 2008 Nike also made a special edition: brown leather uppers on bright blue plates, inspired by the boots of the 1954 World Cup. A kangaroo leather Laser II came too (Rooney wore that one).
In November 2009 Rooney captained England against Brazil in Silver/Orange/Black. In October 2017, at Everton, he went back to the Laser II and scored a penalty against Brighton.

T90 Laser III

Rooney. Manchester derby. That bicycle kick. February 2011, in the T90 Laser III.
Raised fins and flat pods on the instep. Each fin sits at its own angle and height, up to 3 mm, for swerve.

Old Trafford, against Manchester City. SoccerBible called it "the greatest goal of Rooney's career to date". He had moved into the Laser III early in 2010, and weeks later scored the winner in the League Cup final. He scored in the 2011 Champions League final too.
Nike launched it in Manchester in January 2010, with Rooney there. It was built with Torres, Rooney, Robbie Keane, Rio Ferdinand and Gattuso. Torres mapped where the ball should hit the boot.
The normal version sits on a TPU plate, the Elite on carbon fibre. At the 2010 World Cup the Elite Series dressed Nike's lines in Metallic Mach Purple and Total Orange. 15 colourways, and a kangaroo leather version too.

T90 Laser IV

Torres won the Golden Boot at Euro 2012 in the Laser IV. A year later Rooney lifted his last Premier League title in a pair.
Strips on the instep split into Power and Swerve zones, with smaller fins than the Laser III.

It hit shops on 16 September 2011 in White/Black/Total Orange, at £140. Sneijder wore it first in a match, with Rooney, Torres, Ferdinand and Higuaín in it too. Rooney on the instep: "You're able to generate a lot more spin."
No Elite at launch and no carbon plate. 270 g, 50 g lighter than before. The KL version came later in 2011, in Kanga-Lite from the CTR360. ACC versions, for grip in the wet, came in 2013.
At Euro 2012 it was part of Nike's Clash pack. In June 2013 Rooney moved to the Hypervenom, the boot that replaced the T90.

The circled 90. Rooney's bicycle kick. That bright yellow Laser. Every T90 had its moment. But when we think T90, we see yellow. If we could keep one? The Zest yellow Laser I. Easy.
The Laser Came Back. Then The Shoe.
2019 RemakeIn March 2019 Nike brought the Laser I back: 2,000 pairs, each numbered on the plate.

It dropped at 8am on 21 March 2019 at Pro:Direct, in the launch colours, Zest/Black/Sport Red, with the same skeleton graphic on the plate. Style code BV1643-701.
In March 2020 Nike also dressed a Phantom Venom as the 2002 T90 II for its Future DNA series. A nod, not a remake.
↑ All ErasNot a boot. In 2025 Nike brought back the T90 III as a flat-soled shoe for the street and small-sided games: the quilted upper and the uneven laces, no studs. Footy Headlines reported that Nike won't bring back a T90 with studs for 11-a-side.

Questions
How does the Nike T90 fit?
One boot reviewer (SoccerReviews For You) says the Laser IV fits true to size, with a narrower toe box than earlier Lasers and a slightly wider midfoot. The synthetic ACC version is tighter: go half a size up if you want room. The kangaroo leather Laser III starts at a normal width but stretches about half a size.

The lacing. The Laser II (2008) added V-Twin lacing and an updated Shot Shield that kept the Laser I's rings.
What's the difference between the T90 Laser III Elite and the standard Laser III?
The plate. The Elite sits on a carbon fibre plate, the standard Laser III on a TPU plate. The 2010 World Cup Elite Series came in Metallic Mach Purple and Total Orange.
What's the difference between the T90 Laser III and Laser IV?
The instep and the plate. The Laser III has fins up to 3 mm tall and pods, and the Elite has a carbon plate. The Laser IV has strips in Power and Swerve zones with smaller fins, a TPU plate and no Elite at launch. It weighs 270 g.
What's the difference between the T90 Laser IV and the Laser IV KL?

Is the Nike T90 coming back?
As a shoe, yes. In 2025 Nike brought back the T90 III with a flat rubber sole, for the street and small-sided games. Footy Headlines reported that Nike won't bring back a T90 with studs for 11-a-side.
Is the T90 Aerow a boot?
No. Aerow and Tracer were Nike Total 90 match balls. The T90 Tracer was the Premier League ball in 2010/11.
How do I tell which T90 I have?
Check the instep. A tongue over the laces: Air Zoom or II. Circled 90, no tongue: III. Rings on the instep: Laser I. V-Twin lacing: Laser II. Tall fins and pods: Laser III. Strips in Power and Swerve zones: Laser IV. A number out of 2,000 on the plate: the 2019 remake.
