The Nike Magista was Nike's control boot from 2014 to 2018. The Magista Obra, revealed in March 2014, was Nike's first Flyknit football boot, with a knitted sock collar. The Opus was the low-cut version. The Obra 2 and Opus 2 followed in July 2016, and the Phantom Vision replaced the Magista in July 2018.
Magista Obra 1

13 July 2014, the World Cup final. Mario Götze scores the winner in the 113th minute, in Magista Obras. Four months earlier, Nike had only just revealed it.
A knitted sock collar (Dynamic Fit), one-piece Flyknit with no tongue, a heel counter on the outside and round studs only on the FG plate.

Nike revealed it on 6 March 2014 at an event in Barcelona, with Andrés Iniesta as the face. It reached shops that spring, ahead of the World Cup. Designer Denis Dekovic's team took about four years and 180 prototypes. The first ones were called Maestri, with a camo NikeSkin upper.
It was Nike's first Flyknit football boot. A thin NikeSkin film sits over the knit, and there's no insole board, so your foot sits lower. Round studs all over the plate, for turning. About 204 g. In the US it pre-ordered at $274.99. Nike's Phil McCartney said it "feels like an extension of the player's body".
Nike consulted Götze while it built the boot. Pogba made it his: through 2014/15 he went through custom Obras, and by 25 February 2015 he was on his 10th different boot of the season. David Luiz, Thiago Silva and Joe Hart wore it too. Footy Headlines counted 26 Obra 1 colourways from 2014 to 2016.

Magista Opus 1

Not everyone wanted the sock collar. In the second half of 2014/15 Iniesta moved from the Obra to the low-cut Opus, with Courtois and Busquets wearing it too.
No collar. A soft synthetic Kangalite upper instead of Flyknit. Same round-stud look on the FG plate.

The Opus wasn't a second Magista. It launched in the same family as the Obra in spring 2014, one tier down: $199.99 in the US, about 8 oz. Under it sat the Orden, the Onda and the cheapest one, the Ola.
Its Kangalite upper is the same kind used on the CTR360 Maestri, and one outlet called the Opus the real heir to the Maestri. Black/White/Volt Obras and Opus pairs landed in July 2014.

MagistaX
Five-A-Side · Indoor & Turf
Cages, courts and street pitches. In 2015 the Magista got a small-sided version. The X stands for the ten players in a five-a-side game.
Not a grass boot. Indoor (IC) and turf (TF) soles only, with a Lunarlon midsole for cushioning.

The MagistaX Proximo came first, in April 2015, as part of Nike's new FootballX range. The launch colourway, Street, was black with reflective graphics, inspired by games under streetlights. A leather upper with NikeSkin, and recycled Nike Grind rubber on the wear zones.
In early October 2015 the MagistaX Finale followed: a low cut based on the Opus, £65, launched in Black/Volt with splatter laces.
Both got a second version in 2016. The Proximo II had a knitted upper and a taller Dynamic Fit collar. The Finale II came in Black/Total Crimson.

Magista Obra 2

2016 brought a new Magista: raised texture on the knit, a reshaped collar that dips lower at the Achilles, and a new stud layout. That July Kevin De Bruyne left the Superfly for it. Götze and Matuidi wore it from the launch.
A heel counter hidden inside, and a circle of four bladed studs among ten round ones on the plate.

Nike introduced it on 12 July 2016 and it went on sale in late July at $300, in Volt/Total Orange/Pink Blast/Black with a heat-map print. Nike called it the Magista Obra II.
Ball Texture means raised peaks and troughs on the Flyknit, placed using data on where your foot meets the ball. NikeSkin with ACC on top for wet days. The new plate has a circle of four bladed studs plus ten round ones, and weighs 60 g against 85 g before. The collar is cut to follow the foot instead of straight, and one reviewer found less heel rub. SoccerBible saw CTR360 touches in the stud layout.
The packs kept coming: Pitch Dark, the Elite Pack, Radiation Flare, Motion Blur, then Fire and Ice in November 2017. In May 2018 came Just Do It, the 2018 World Cup pair with an iridescent plate, £250. By then Nike was calling it the Obra II Elite DF. It was the last Magista pack.

Magista Opus 2

May 2018. Iniesta's last game at Camp Nou. Nike made him a one-off pearl-and-gold Magista Opus, with his debut date, 29-10-2002, printed on it. The Magista's last season.
Low cut, no collar. A Kangalite upper, a heel counter inside and the Obra 2 plate.

It arrived with the Obra 2 on 12 July 2016, at $230. Casemiro, Iniesta and Arda Turan were named at launch. Iniesta later got custom camo and leather-look Opus pairs, and wore Magistas at the 2018 World Cup.
Dark Lightning dropped in November 2016 and Stealth Pitch Dark in June 2017 (£180). For 2018 Nike renamed it the Obra II Elite, so some 2018 low cuts carry the Obra name.
On 17 July 2018 Nike announced the Phantom Vision, and it replaced the Magista. Plenty of pros weren't ready: Iniesta, Busquets, Eriksen, Dier, Kimmich and Courtois all played their last game of 2017/18 in Magistas.

Nike moved on to the Phantom Vision, but plenty of pros stuck with their Magistas. Four years, two generations, and pairs we're still hunting for. If we could keep one for ourselves? The original Obra. Easy.

Questions
How does the Nike Magista fit?
Most reviewers say true to size, but snug in the length, and one tester found the Obra and Opus half a size small. There's good room through the midfoot, a little less at the toes, and the Flyknit stretches. The Obra 2 is true to size and roomier in the forefoot. Between sizes? Go half a size up.
Is the Nike Magista good for wide feet?
For medium to wide feet, yes. One boot reviewer called the Obra 2 the widest Nike boot through the forefoot at the time, and said the first Magista was a favourite for wider feet. For very wide feet it may not be enough.
Is the Magista Obra hard to get on?
Not really. The collar opening has to stretch to let your foot in, then the knit snaps back to a snug fit. It feels tight at first and settles after a few wears. The Obra 2 collar sits lower at the back, with less pressure on the Achilles.
Does the Magista fit like the Hypervenom?
It's built on the same last as the Hypervenom, but the Obra fits tighter because of the Flyknit.
When did the Nike Magista come out?
Nike revealed the Magista Obra on 6 March 2014 in Barcelona. It reached shops in spring 2014, before the World Cup.
How many Nike Magista models are there?
Two generations, each with a collared Obra and a low-cut Opus: Obra 1 and Opus 1 (2014), Obra 2 and Opus 2 (2016). Plus the MagistaX indoor and turf line from 2015.
What's the difference between the Magista Obra and Opus?
The collar and the upper. The Obra is Flyknit with a knitted Dynamic Fit collar. The Opus is low cut, with a synthetic Kangalite upper and no collar.
What's the difference between the Magista Obra 1 and Obra 2?
The Obra 2 (2016) added Ball Texture on the knit, a reshaped collar that dips lower at the Achilles, a heel counter inside and a lighter plate with bladed and round studs. On the FG plate, the Obra 1 (2014) has round studs only, and its heel counter sits on the outside.
Is the Magista Obra II the same as the Obra 2?
Yes. Nike wrote Obra II and Opus II; most shops, us included, write Obra 2 and Opus 2. In 2018 Nike renamed the Flyknit one the Obra II Elite DF and the Opus II the Obra II Elite.
What boots did Götze wear in the 2014 World Cup final?
The Nike Magista Obra. He scored the winner in the 113th minute on 13 July 2014. We haven't found a reliable source for the exact colourway.
Was the Magista Nike's first Flyknit boot?
It was Nike's first Flyknit football boot. The Mercurial Superfly IV came after it, in 2014.
What are the Magista tiers?
From the top: Obra, Opus, Orden, Onda and Ola. Only the Obra and Opus got much wear from pros.
What's the difference between the Nike Magista and the CTR360?
The Magista took over from the CTR360 Maestri as Nike's control boot in 2014. The Opus kept a Kangalite upper like the Maestri, while the Obra moved to Flyknit with a sock collar. On the Obra 2, SoccerBible saw CTR360 touches in the stud layout.
What's the difference between the Magista Obra and the Mercurial Superfly IV?
Both brought Flyknit and a Dynamic Fit collar in 2014. The Magista Obra came first, revealed in March 2014, as Nike's control boot. The Superfly IV, revealed in April 2014, was the Mercurial speed boot, worn by Cristiano Ronaldo.
What is the Nike MagistaX?
The Magista's indoor and turf line, part of Nike's FootballX range. The Proximo came out in April 2015 and the low-cut Finale in October 2015, with second versions in 2016. More on the MagistaX.
What's the difference between MagistaX Proximo and Finale?
The collar. The Proximo (April 2015) has a knitted sock collar. The Finale (October 2015) is a low cut based on the Opus, and cost less: £65. Both came in indoor (IC) and turf (TF) versions. More on the MagistaX.
Can you wear MagistaX on grass?
They're not made for it. MagistaX came as IC, a flat rubber sole for indoor courts and futsal, or TF, lots of small rubber studs for artificial turf. For grass pitches you'd want an FG or SG Magista. More on the MagistaX.
Which Magista did Pogba wear?
The Magista Obra, often custom. He was the first to wear the Poison Green Obra in February 2015, and on 25 February 2015 he wore a custom Gold/Volt/Black Obra against Dortmund, his 10th different boot of the season. In February 2016 he was reported to be moving to adidas.
What replaced the Nike Magista?
The Phantom Vision, announced on 17 July 2018.
Why did Nike stop making the Magista?
We found no public reason from Nike. In 2018 the Phantom Vision took its place, and a Nike designer said it "comes in as the Magista is filtered out".
Is there a Magista Obra 3?
No. The Obra 2 was the last Obra, and the Phantom Vision took over in 2018.
Has Nike brought back the Magista?
Not as of October 2026. Nike has remade other old boots, but we haven't seen a Magista remake.
How many colourways did the Magista Obra have?
Footy Headlines counted 26 for the Obra 1 between 2014 and 2016: 5 in 2014, 13 in 2015 and 8 in 2016.
What does DF mean on a Magista?
Dynamic Fit: the knitted sock collar around the ankle on the Obra and Obra 2.
