The adidas Copa is adidas's leather boot line for touch and a classic feel. It starts with the Copa Mundial, made for the 1982 World Cup and still made in Germany. The Copa Icon (2022) is a modern Mundial. The modern line began with the Copa 17 in November 2016, then the 18, 19, 20 and Sense, and the Copa Pure, up to the Copa Pure 4 in 2026.
Copa Mundial

Black leather, white stripes and a long fold-over tongue. The Copa Mundial made its name at the 1982 World Cup in Spain, and adidas still makes it in Scheinfeld, Germany.
Round moulded studs and "Copa Mundial" printed on the side. The screw-in SG version is called the adidas World Cup.

It made its name at the 1982 World Cup in Spain and has been made in Scheinfeld, Germany ever since. adidas's own blog says work on it started in 1979, with that World Cup in mind. SoccerBible says Adi Dassler worked on it early on. Beckenbauer, Platini, Zico and Rummenigge all wore it.
SoccerBible calls it the best-selling football boot of all time, with over 10 million pairs. It was seen at every World Cup from Spain '82 to Russia 2018. At Russia 2018 every referee got a blacked-out pair with "Russia 2018" in gold on the heel. Not for sale. Kaká switched to it at Orlando City in 2015.
For decades the upper was kangaroo leather. In 2025 adidas said it had stopped buying kangaroo leather in 2024 and would end products with it within 2025. adidas's own listing now just says "soft leather upper".
The colour barely moved for 31 years. Then a limited white pair dropped in October 2013. The Samba collection followed in March 2014, with five colourways for Brazil. Then the Eternal Class white Mundial (Boxing Day 2020), the Copa Mundial 21 Primeknit (May 2021) and the Mundial Federations pack (March 2024).

Copa Icon

Our Copa Mundial in Black/White, next to our Copa Icon in White/Gold Metallic, the launch colours.
The Copa Mundial, reworked for the modern game. Same classic look, on a slimmer, modern soleplate. SoccerBible called it "a modern revamp of the Copa Mundial".
"COPA ICON" on the side, and a short tongue instead of the long fold-over.

It was first seen at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, on the referees. adidas made a black-and-white pair for the officials, with the World Cup logo on the heel. Not all of them wore it, and it was never sold.
The white-and-gold pair hit shops on 29 November 2022. The black-and-white Mundial Edition followed in January 2023, and the Copa Icon 2 in December 2024.

Copa 17

Lukas Podolski scored five in a 6-2 win in the white-and-gold Crowning Glory pair. Vincent Kompany moved into it at Man City. The modern Copa had arrived.
Leather front, smooth synthetic heel in a contrast colour, and a big fold-over tongue. Laces, no collar.

adidas revealed the Copa 17 Red Limit on 16 November 2016, and it went on sale on 1 December. The Copa SL had come first, in April 2016, with a synthetic upper. The Copa 17 brought kangaroo leather back on the front, with a fold-over compression tongue and the SprintFrame plate.
The top tier was the laced 17.1. There was no laceless Copa 17+. In December 2016 the white-and-gold Crowning Glory pair marked 35 years of the Copa Mundial.
The packs kept coming in 2017: Chequered Black (January), Blue Blast (January), Turbocharge (March), Dust Storm (May) and Pyro Storm (September).

Copa 18

The fold-over tongue was gone. The Copa 18 brought a sock-like knit tongue and heel, with the same quiet look. SoccerBible called the update subtle.
No stitch lines on the leather. Still laced: there was no laceless Copa 18.

The Copa 18.1 launched on 30 November 2017 in the Skystalker pack, in white and black. The kangaroo leather lost its stitching, with a cage inside instead. Footy Headlines called it the first adidas boot to pair a leather upper with a knitted heel and tongue.
The 2018 World Cup pack was Energy Mode (May 2018), and Footy Headlines said no high-profile player would wear it in Russia.
Deadly Strike came in March 2018, Shadow Mode and Team Mode in July, and Spectral Mode in September.

Copa 19

Our Copa 19+ SG and Copa 19.1 FG, both in 302 Redirect (May 2019).
Paulo Dybala wore a mystery black laceless Copa in the Champions League before launch. Then came the Copa 19+, with no laces at all.
19+: no laces and a sock collar, with the Three Stripes only on the inside of the foot. The 19.1 has laces and stripes on the outside.

adidas launched the Copa 19+ on 8 November 2018 in the Initiator pack: white and red, with a champagne soleplate. Dybala was the face. His words: "I've always been a fan of the COPA because of the classic look and incredible first touch."
The kangaroo leather got Fusionskin, so it's smoother and takes in less water. The 19+ and the laced 19.1 share the same leather and plate.
Toni Kroos got a custom white Copa 19.1, but went back to his 11Pro. Then the packs: Archetic (January 2019, triple black), 302 Redirect (May 2019, for the cup finals) and Hardwired (July 2019).

Copa 20

New colours, familiar boot. The Copa 20 kept the leather and plate of the 19. Dybala and João Félix wore it.
Hard to tell from the Copa 19. Check the label inside or the pack colours.

It was first seen in October 2019. SoccerBible called it "the most subtle of upgrades". Footy Headlines said the 20.1 is practically impossible to tell apart from the 19.1. Laceless 20+, laced 20.1.
Its big pack was Mutator in January 2020: red fading into a black collar. Locality and Uniforia came in May, Uniforia with paint splashes from the Euro 2020 ball. Then Dark Motion (July), Inflight (August), Glory Hunter (October) and Precision to Blur (November).

Copa Sense

The Copa Sense tried something new: SensePods, foam pods that fill the gap around your heel. Pedri became the face of the line.
Bumps on the outside of the heel, a wavy leather upper and a collar that opens to the outside.

Dybala trained in a blacked-out pair first, then Pedri. The Copa Sense landed on 16 February 2021, the last boot of the Superlative pack, on a gold soleplate. TouchPods soften the ball's impact, and two SoftStuds sit under the forefoot. Fusionskin joins the leather to a knit. Sense+ is laceless, Sense.1 is laced.
The Inner Life edition (March 2021) printed the pods on the outside. Superspectral (April 2021) took over from Superlative on the pros. Footy Headlines reported a one-off Meteorite pair for Insigne after Italy won Euro 2020.
Numbers Up (September 2021) had "99 PAS" on the upper, from FIFA 22. Footy Headlines listed Neuer, Gündoğan and De Gea for the Game Data pack in 2022. The last big one was Al Rihla, the 2022 World Cup pack.

Copa Pure

Declan Rice wore it first, in a black-and-gold Teaser. In May 2023 Prada put its name on it: shimmering silver leather, a leather lace cover and red Linea Rossa details.
Quilted leather on the forefoot running into a knit collar. Copa Pure+ has no laces, Copa Pure.1 has laces.

The SG Teaser came out on 26 December 2022. Rice had worn it for weeks, reportedly at the 2022 World Cup too. It swapped kangaroo leather for calf leather, with a new shape and plate.
The full launch was on 10 January 2023 in three colourways: Own Your Football, Nightstrike (all black) and Pearlized (all white). SoccerBible said it was 48g lighter than the Copa Sense. That month Pedri moved to Predator, and Dybala trained in the Copa Pure+.
Parley (March 2023), Heatspawn (April) and Crazyrush (July) followed. The adidas Football for Prada Copa Pure came on 22 May 2023, in limited numbers. Dybala and Catarina Macario wore it in the campaign.

Copa Pure 2

The Copa Pure 2 didn't change much. SoccerBible called it more a tweak on the last model.
Laces on every version. No laceless Copa Pure 2. The 2+ has a knit collar, the 2.1 a textile one.

It launched on 3 October 2023 in the Marinerush pack: Lucid Blue, white and Solar Red, colours that recall the 2012 adiPure 11Pro. Two versions, 2+ and 2.1, on a Torsionframe outsole. Later pairs were sold as the Copa Pure 2 Elite.

Copa Pure 3

Declan Rice trained in the Copa 11Pure before it dropped in March 2025: a Copa Pure 3 in the colours of the 2012 adiPure 11Pro. A straight nod to the old boot.
More grooves on the leather than the Copa Pure 2, and the laceless version is back (Elite only).

Born For Goals landed in January 2026: mostly white, with black and silver stripes and red. The Elite has Fusionskin leather, a floating tongue, a 3D Touchprint on both sides of the forefoot and the Comfort Frame plate. There's a laceless Elite too. Lower tiers like the League get a Fusionfeel upper and a TPU plate. adidas put most of the campaign behind the F50 and Predator.
Final Rush, in Clear Mint, closed out 2026 in September.

Questions
How does the Copa Mundial fit?
adidas says order your usual size, but many players go smaller. One boot review site went a full size down, and Unisport says sizing down is often recommended. It's soft leather that stretches, so it should feel snug when new. Roomy through the midfoot, a bit narrower at the toe. More on the Mundial.
Does the Copa Mundial stretch?
Yes. Unisport says it stretches more than a modern leather boot and moulds to your foot, so buy it as tight as you can.
Is the adidas Copa good for wide feet?
The Copa Mundial is one of the roomiest boots around and suits wide feet. Unisport says the Copa Pure 4 is generous in the forefoot and works for wider feet too.
How does the Copa Pure 3 fit?
Unisport says the Copa Pure 3 tends to run large, so half a size down gives a closer fit.
How does the Copa Pure 4 fit?
Roomy in the forefoot, a bit more shaped in the midfoot, and the leather moulds to your foot. Unisport says it suits narrow, medium and wide feet. More on the Copa Pure 4.
When did the Copa Mundial come out?
At the 1982 World Cup in Spain, where it made its name. adidas's blog says work on it started in 1979, with that tournament in mind. More on the Mundial.
Is the Copa Mundial still made in Germany?
Yes. adidas says it's made at its factory in Scheinfeld, Germany, and Pro:Direct says the same.
Is the Copa Mundial still kangaroo leather?
Not clear for new pairs. It was kangaroo leather for decades. In 2025 adidas said it had stopped buying kangaroo leather in 2024 and would end products with it within 2025. adidas's own listing now just says "soft leather upper", and no source we found names the new leather. Check the label on newer pairs.
Is the Copa Mundial the best-selling football boot?
SoccerBible and Pro:Direct call it the best-selling football boot of all time, with over 10 million pairs sold. We found no adidas figure.
What's the difference between the Copa Mundial and the Copa Icon?
The Mundial has the long fold-over tongue and moulded studs. The Copa Icon (2022) is a modern take on it: "COPA ICON" on the side, a short tongue and a slimmer modern soleplate.
What's the difference between the Copa Mundial and the Copa Pure?
The Mundial is the classic: a leather upper, a long fold-over tongue, round moulded studs, made in Germany. The Copa Pure (2023 on) is the modern line: Fusionskin calf leather, a knit collar or tongue, a modern plate, and laceless versions of most models.
What do + and .1 mean on a Copa?
On the Copa 19, Copa 20, Copa Sense and Copa Pure, + is laceless and .1 is laced. The Copa 17 and Copa 18 top out at the laced .1. The Copa Pure 2+ has laces.
What was the first laceless Copa?
The Copa 19+, launched on 8 November 2018 with Paulo Dybala.
What's the difference between the Copa 19 and the Copa 20?
Very little. The Copa 20 kept the Copa 19's leather and plate. SoccerBible called it "the most subtle of upgrades".
What are SensePods on the Copa Sense?
Foam pods inside the heel of the Copa Sense, filling the gap around the ankle. You can see them as bumps on the outside.
What's the difference between the Copa Pure 2 and the Copa Pure 3?
The Copa Pure 2 (October 2023) only came with laces. The Copa Pure 3 (January 2025) has more grooves on the leather and brought back a laceless Elite.
What's the difference between the Copa Pure 3 and the Copa Pure 4?
The Copa Pure 3 (2025) has more grooves on the leather than the Pure 2, and Unisport says it runs large. The Copa Pure 4 (2026) has a thin pinline from forefoot to heel, red on the launch pairs. The Pure 4 Elite adds a floating tongue, a 3D Touchprint on the forefoot and the Comfort Frame plate. Both have a laceless Elite.
What is the latest adidas Copa?
The Copa Pure 4, launched in the Born For Goals pack in January 2026.
Is the adidas Copa being discontinued?
Not confirmed. Footy Headlines leaks say a new adiPure line replaces the Copa in 2027. adidas hasn't confirmed it, and the Copa Mundial is still made.
Who wears the adidas Copa?
Beckenbauer, Platini, Zico and Rummenigge wore the Mundial. Paulo Dybala was the face of the Copa 19, and Pedri of the Copa Sense. Manuel Neuer, Declan Rice and Alexis Mac Allister are the faces of the Copa Pure 4.
How do I tell which Copa I have?
Check the tongue, the laces and the heel. Long fold-over tongue: Mundial or Copa 17. Knit tongue: Copa 18. Short tongue and "COPA ICON" on the side: Copa Icon. No laces and a sock collar: 19+ or 20+. Pods around the heel: Copa Sense. Quilted leather into a knit collar: Copa Pure or newer.
