The Lineup

In Short

The Hypervenom was Nike's boot for strikers who make sharp moves in tight spaces. Neymar unveiled it in Rio in May 2013. Three generations followed: the Phantom 1 (2013), the Phantom 2 and the low-cut Phinish (2015), and the Phantom 3 (2017). The Phantom VNM replaced it in January 2019. In 2025 Nike remade the original.

Hypervenom Phantom 1

Our Phantom 1 FG in Black/Bright Citrus, the launch colours.

Neymar showed it off in Rio on 28 May 2013, days after agreeing to join Barcelona. A year later he took it to a home World Cup. Thin NikeSkin, barefoot feel, skull on the heel. Loud from day one.

Spot The Difference

Honeycomb NikeSkin and no collar. A flipped Swoosh on the instep and a skull on the heel.

Nike built it to replace the Total 90: a boot for attackers who make sharp, quick moves in small spaces. NikeSkin is a thin mesh fused with polyurethane, with ACC for grip in the wet. Underneath: conical studs and a groove through the forefoot. The flipped Swoosh came from the Mercurial. That launch orange? Taken straight from Nike's shoeboxes.

Three tiers at launch: the Phantom at the top ($224.99, about 7.2 oz), the Phatal in a soft synthetic and the budget Phelon. Rooney debuted it in Rio too, and the early squad had Ibrahimović, Isco, Higuaín, Thiago and Sneijder.

At the 2014 World Cup Neymar switched to a one-off gold pair, Sonho Dourado (Golden Dream), for the knockouts. It ended hard: he was injured against Colombia in the quarter-final, and Brazil lost 7-1 to Germany. About 19 colourways dropped in total, and Cavani moved into it in January 2015.

Hypervenom Phantom 2

Nike Hypervenom Phantom 2 FG, Green Glow/Hyper Orange/Metallic Silver – Boots Plug
Our Phantom 2 FG in Green Glow/Hyper Orange/Metallic Silver.

The boots behind Leicester's unbelievable 2015/16 title. Vardy and Mahrez both wore the Phantom 2, and all 24 of Vardy's league goals came in Hypervenoms. The big change: a sock collar.

Spot The Difference

A Dynamic Fit sock collar on a NikeSkin upper, with Flywire in the midfoot.

It landed in late May 2015, about two years after the Rio launch, in Wolf Grey/Total Orange/Black. Liverpool's Jordan Ibe was first seen in it. Nike added the high Dynamic Fit collar, Flywire in the midfoot, a softer plate and bolder graphics. £230 at launch, about 209 g.

The tiers: Phantom II DF at the top, the low-cut Phinish, then Phatal II, Phelon II and Phade II.

Neymar wore it for about four months, then moved to the Mercurial in September 2015. His Ousadia Alegria pair followed in early 2016, then the NJR x Jordan in June 2016. Lewandowski got his own red and black pair with the Polish eagle after scoring five goals in nine minutes against Wolfsburg. And Nike gave Vardy and Mahrez a custom "VAHREZ" pair for Leicester's last game.

Not everyone was sold. The common view: stiffer, more structured, further from the first one.

Hypervenom Phinish

Our Phinish SG-PRO, Radiant Reveal (2016): the low-cut top tier.

Same top tier, kept low. Plenty saw the Phinish as the real follow-up to the OG.

Gen 2 graphics on a low cut. No sock collar, on a plate like the Phantom 1's.

Made for Rooney and Kane, in shops from early June 2015. At about 198 g it was lighter than the 209 g Phantom 2, and cheaper at £160. In February 2016 Kane was seen in a modified low-cut pair with a custom tongue.

In May 2016 Nike brought the Phantom 1 upper back to the second generation. Nike's Max Blau said the newer upper took longer to break in. The Euro 2016 Phinish, in the Spark Brilliance pack, went on sale on 29 May 2016. Some shops call these later pairs the Phinish II.

From 2017 the Phinish name was gone: the low cut became the plain Phantom 3.

Kane, Rashford and Aubameyang. Eight strikers, one night in London. The Phantom 3 brought Flyknit to the Hypervenom.

A knitted Flyknit upper with no tongue. High DF collar or plain low cut.

It launched in January 2017 in green and orange, part of the Radiation Flare pack. Aubameyang, Lewandowski and Vardy wore it from the start. The Strike Night pack went on sale on 27 February, and Nike's Strike Night event in London followed on 1 March 2017.

Nike's designer Nate VanHook reworked the whole boot, with a plate about 17% lighter than the Phantom 2's and more flexible. Kane and Lewandowski helped test it. Kane asked for a choice of high and low cut, so Nike made both. It was billed as Nike's first Flyknit low-cut football boot.

Nike dropped the Phinish name: the high cut became the Phantom 3 DF and the low cut the plain Phantom 3. Below them sat the Phatal, Phelon and Phade. US prices: $300 for the DF, $250 for the low.

Cavani and Icardi got a Nike x EA Sports edition in September 2017. And in 2026 Michael Olise wore custom Phantom 3 DF pairs at the World Cup.

Nike Hypervenom Phantom 1 SG Remake, Black/Bright Citrus – Boots Plug
Our Phantom 1 SG Remake in Black/Bright Citrus. A remake, not a 2013 pair.

No fourth generation. In January 2019 the Phantom VNM took over. Then in May 2025 Nike brought the OG back as the Hypervenom Phantom RGN SE, with the Transform Hydra days later.

Nike folded its striker boots into the Phantom family. We couldn't find an official reason. The common view: the second and third generations drifted from what made the first one special.

The RGN SE dropped on 29 May 2025 in Black/Bright Citrus: the original NikeSkin upper, ACC on the tongue and the Phantom 3 soleplate. £230, style code HQ8561-001.

The Transform Hydra followed on 2 June 2025, a remake of the 2015 Transform SE. Its upper changes colour when it's wet, and a spider takes the skull's place. $260, style code HV0153-001.

Footy Headlines reports a full return in 2027. Nike hasn't confirmed it.

Questions

How does the Hypervenom fit?

Take your normal size. The Phantom 1 fits true to size and feels tight at first, but the NikeSkin stretches after an hour or two of wear. The Phantom 3 DF is true to size on length with a medium to wide fit. The Phantom 2 is the roomiest.

Is the Hypervenom good for wide feet?

Mostly, yes. The Phantom 2 is a wide fit, so skip it if your feet are narrow or medium. The 2016 Phinish II has one of the roomier fits, and the Phantom 3 DF suits a standard wide foot. The Phantom 1 suits most feet, but not very wide ones.

Are Hypervenoms hard to get on?

Not really. The Phantom 2 collar is one of the easiest sock collars to slip on. The Phinish has a built-in tongue, so the opening is tight: turn the boot sideways as you slide your foot in. The Phantom 3 DF collar stays tight at the top but stretches as your ankle moves.

When did the Nike Hypervenom come out?

May 2013. Neymar unveiled the first Hypervenom Phantom in Rio de Janeiro on 28 May 2013.

How many Hypervenom generations are there?

Three: the Phantom 1 (2013), the Phantom 2 with the low-cut Phinish (2015) and the Phantom 3 (2017). Nike remade the original in 2025.

Who wore the Hypervenom?

Neymar was the face of the Phantom 1. Rooney, Lewandowski, Higuaín, Ibrahimović, Isco, Kane, Cavani, Vardy, Mahrez and Aubameyang all wore Hypervenoms too.

What Hypervenom did Neymar wear at the 2014 World Cup?

The Hypervenom Phantom 1. From the knockout rounds he switched to a one-off gold pair, Sonho Dourado (Golden Dream).

Which Hypervenom did Jamie Vardy wear when Leicester won the league?

The Hypervenom Phantom 2. Vardy and Mahrez both wore it in 2015/16, and Nike gave them a custom "VAHREZ" pair for Leicester's last game.

What's the difference between the Hypervenom Phantom 1 and Phantom 2?

The collar. The Phantom 1 (2013) is low cut with a honeycomb NikeSkin upper. The Phantom 2 (2015) added a Dynamic Fit sock collar, Flywire in the midfoot and a softer plate.

What's the difference between the 2013 Phantom 1 and the 2025 remake?

The plate. The 2025 Phantom RGN SE has the 2013 look and a NikeSkin upper, but it sits on the Phantom 3 soleplate. Its style code is HQ8561-001. More in Remakes.

What's the difference between Phantom, Phinish, Phatal and Phelon?

The Phantom is the top tier. The Phinish is the 2015 low-cut top tier. The Phatal and Phelon are the mid and entry tiers.

What's the difference between the Phantom 2 and the Phinish?

The collar. The Phantom 2 has the Dynamic Fit sock collar. The Phinish is the same top tier in a low cut, a little lighter (about 198 g against 209 g), on a plate like the first generation's.

What does DF mean on a Hypervenom?

Dynamic Fit: the sock-like collar around the ankle, from the Phantom 2 onwards.

What is NikeSkin?

A thin mesh fused with polyurethane, for a close, barefoot touch. It's the upper on the Phantom 1.

Why did Nike stop making the Hypervenom?

We couldn't find an official reason from Nike. The Phantom VNM replaced it in January 2019, when Nike folded its striker boots into the Phantom line.

What replaced the Hypervenom?

The Phantom VNM (Phantom Venom), in January 2019. There was no fourth Hypervenom.

What is the Hypervenom Phantom RGN?

Nike's 2025 remake of the Phantom 1, out on 29 May 2025 in Black/Bright Citrus, with the original NikeSkin upper on a Phantom 3 soleplate. More in Remakes.

Is the Hypervenom coming back?

Nike remade the original in 2025 (the Phantom RGN). Reports of a full return in 2027 are not confirmed by Nike.

How do I tell which Hypervenom I have?

Check the upper and the collar. Honeycomb NikeSkin, no collar: Phantom 1. Sock collar with Flywire: Phantom 2. Gen 2 graphics on a low cut: Phinish. Knitted upper, no tongue: Phantom 3, high DF or low.
