The adidas Predator is adidas's boot for striking and bending the ball, known for the rubber on its upper. It launched in 1994 and ran to the Predator Instinct in 2015. After a break it came back in November 2017 as the Predator 18+. The newest is the Predator 26, first out in December 2025.
Predator
2014 Remake ShownIt started with Craig Johnston, the ex-Liverpool midfielder, coaching kids' football in Australia. His idea: rubber on the upper. In 1994 adidas made it the Predator.
Rubber ridges across the front, the Predator "eyes" on the tongue, and black with white stripes and red.

Black, white and red was the only colourway at launch. Kangaroo leather, made in Germany. adidas sold it on power and swerve.
adidas marked 25 years of the Predator in 2019 and 30 in 2024. That December, SoccerBible and adidas put out Under The Tongue, a film about how it all started.

Predator Rapier

A year after the first one came the Rapier. It brought the fold-over tongue, and the tongue stayed on the Predator for about 15 years.
Smoother leather on the toe. Rubber only on the striking area and the sides, and a tongue that folds over the laces.

It was the first Predator to come in more than one colourway. It launched in black, white and red, with more red on the heel.

Predator Touch

17 August 1996, Selhurst Park. Beckham scores from inside his own half against Wimbledon, in Predator Touch boots with Charlie Miller's name on the tongue. The only size 8s adidas had.
A red fold-over tongue, longer, over the laces. The rubber is split into panels on the forefoot.

Beckham had asked adidas for Touches for United's first game of the season. He lobbed Neil Sullivan in the 87th minute.
Under the boot, directional Traxion blades for the first time. More kangaroo leather than before.

Released for the World Cup in France. The rubber shrank to strips. Gerrard scored his first Liverpool goal in Accelerators, against Sheffield Wednesday.
In 1999 came the Electricity colourway, black, yellow and red. adidas brought it back in 2018: 1,999 pairs, then 1,998 pairs of the black, white and red for its 20th birthday.

25 years later, on 6 October 2026, adidas brought out a Predator Precision Remade in white and red, next to a new David Beckham Predator.
It launched with Euro 2000 in Precision Blue and took over from the Accelerator. The first Predator with swap-in Traxion studs. The rubber turned into thinner ribs.

Questions
How does the adidas Predator fit?
True to size in every review we found. Width changed over the years: the older Predators and the Freak and Edge are medium to wide. The recent Predator Elite is snug in the forefoot with a narrow midfoot.
Is the adidas Predator good for wide feet?
It depends on the generation. The Predator Edge is one of the better wide fits. The Freak is medium to wide but narrow in the midfoot. The recent Predator Elite suits standard to narrow feet, so wide feet may find it tight.
Are laceless Predators hard to get on?
At first. The laceless 18+, 19+, 20+ and Freak+ have a tight opening that loosens after a few wears. The Edge+ is easy to slip on. The laced 20.1 Low is much easier to wear.
When did the adidas Predator come out?
1994. adidas marked 25 years of the Predator in 2019 and 30 years in 2024.
Who invented the adidas Predator?
Craig Johnston, the ex-Liverpool midfielder. He had the idea of rubber on the upper while coaching kids' football in Australia. adidas launched the first Predator in 1994.
What boots did Beckham wear for his free kick against Greece?
The Predator Precision, in white, silver and red. England 2-2 Greece, Old Trafford, 6 October 2001.
What is the 2026 Beckham Predator Precision Remade?
A remake of the Predator Precision Beckham wore for his free kick against Greece, in white and red. It came out on 6 October 2026, 25 years after that goal, next to a new David Beckham Predator built on today's Predator Elite with a fold-over tongue.
Which boots did Gerrard wear in the 2005 Champions League final?
The Predator Pulse. He headed Liverpool's first goal against AC Milan in Istanbul, and Liverpool won on penalties after 3-3.
What boots did Zidane wear for his Champions League final volley?
The Predator Mania. Real Madrid 2-1 Bayer Leverkusen, Hampden Park, 15 May 2002.
What's the difference between the Predator Accelerator and the Precision?
The Accelerator (1998) has off-centre laces, short rubber strips and a see-through sole. The Precision (2000) added swap-in Traxion studs, Velcro to hold the fold-over tongue down, thinner rubber ribs and stripes that wave towards the heel.
Which Predators did David Beckham wear?
The Touch for his halfway-line goal in 1996, the Accelerator at France 98, the Precision against Greece, the Mania at the 2002 World Cup, the Pulse at Euro 2004, a gold Powerswerve for his 100th England cap and an LZ II in his last match in 2013.
Why did adidas stop the Predator in 2015?
In May 2015 adidas replaced it with two new lines, ACE and X. The Predator came back in November 2017 as the Predator 18+.
What is the fold-over tongue?
The flap that folds down over the laces. It came in on the Rapier in 1995 and stayed until the Powerswerve. The Predator X dropped it. It came back on the Predator 30 in December 2023 and the Predator 24.
What's the difference between the Predator Precision and the Mania?
The tongue. The Precision holds it with Velcro and its stripes wave to the heel. The Mania uses an elastic strap under the boot, with white rubber only on the inside.
What's the difference between the Predator LZ and the LZ II?
The LZ has five separate raised rubber zones. The LZ II has X-shaped fins that overlap across the upper.
What's the difference between the Predator 18+ and 18.1?
Laces. The + is the laceless top boot, the .1 is the laced top boot. The same goes for the 19, 20, Freak, Edge and Accuracy. More on the 18.
What is Demonskin?
Small rubber spikes on the upper for grip on the ball. It came on the Predator 20 Mutator (406 spikes) in January 2020, and the Freak took it all the way round the boot.
What's the difference between the Predator Freak and the Edge?
The Freak has rubber spikes all round. The Edge swapped them for ribbed rubber lines and added a weight in the forefoot.
What's the difference between the Predator 24, 25 and 26?
The 24 brought back the fold-over tongue with Strikeskin fins and a one-piece plate. The 25 is a small update with longer rubber elements and a padded tongue. The 26 has a mesh upper and a Powerspine plate.
What is the Predator Elite?
The top Predator since 2024. It comes laced, Laceless or with a Fold-over Tongue. In our shop the Predator 24, 25 and 26 are all listed as Predator Elite.
What is the Predator Mania Champagne?
The champagne-coloured Mania Beckham wore at the 2002 World Cup. adidas remade it in May 2017, and the Predator 25 launch pair was styled on it.
Is a Predator remake the same as the original?
No. Remakes copy the upper but sit on a newer plate, and some use synthetic uppers. More on the remakes.
How is an original Predator Mania different from the remakes?
The 2002 Mania has a leather upper and a plate with swap-in studs. The remakes sit on newer plates. The 2014 one (1,825 pairs) and the 2017 Champagne have synthetic uppers. The 2022 one (2,002 pairs) is leather on a Predator Freak plate. Since 2024 the Made in Germany pairs have that printed on the tongue.
What is a Made in Germany Predator?
A remake from adidas's factory in Scheinfeld, Bavaria. The series started in July 2024 with the Mania, and each pair has "Made in Germany" on the tongue.
Who wears the adidas Predator now?
Jude Bellingham and Pedri were named for the Predator 26 at the 2026 World Cup. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alessia Russo have worn it too.
How many adidas Predator models are there?
23 main models from 1994 to 2026, from the first Predator to the Predator 26, plus small updates like the Pulse II and limited pairs like the Predator 30.
